Alpesh Chauhan will conduct the BBC SSO’s first concerts of the 2019-20 Season later this week. He stands in for Thomas Dausgaard, who is unwell.

Alpesh will conduct Mahler’s Fifth Symphony in Glasgow on Thursday 26 September and in Edinburgh on Sunday 29 September, as well as Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances in Aberdeen on Friday 27 September. For all three concerts, Alpesh will be joined on stage by Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud for Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor. The opening night in Glasgow will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and streamed live online.

Alpesh made his debut with BBC SSO in May 2015, when he conducted Shostakovich’s Symphony No.15 at Glasgow City Halls. In his review for the Herald, Michael Tumelty commented: “There cannot be the slightest doubt that in Alpesh Chauhan, the BBC SSO has a real find on its hands.”

Following the performances this week, Alpesh returns to the orchestra in December to conduct Stravinsky’s Concerto in E flat major, ‘Dumbarton Oaks’ and selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet. This concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.
