Stellar reviews for Alpesh's Proms debut with the BBC Philharmonic
Alpesh made his Proms debut this weekend, conducting two concerts with the BBC Philharmonic. The BBC Ten Pieces Proms took place on 23 and 24 July, and marked the culmination of the hugely successful Ten Pieces project, which has taken classical music to schools across the UK. The programme of Ten Pieces included solo performances from Matilda Lloyd in Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto, as well as violinist Esther Yoo in Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending.
Following Saturday's performance at the Royal Albert Hall, Ivan Hewett at The Telegraph published a 5* review, commenting "everything worked beautifully together, in a show that could fairly be called a triumph".
Of Alpesh's performance, Charlotte Gardner at Bachtrack noted: "Chauhan and the BBC Philharmonic rose to the challenge magnificently, giving us Haydn with period spring, lucidity and lightness, and a thundering Verdi Requiem" (4*).
Alpesh also appeared on BBC Breakfast and BBC Radio 4's Front Row ahead of the Proms, speaking about the hugely successful Ten Pieces project and his role as a young conductor.
In the i Newspaper's 'Meet the new maestros' feature, Alpesh noted the importance of cultivating diverse audiences in classical music: “There’s always more to be done, everywhere. It should always be a part of our work and our mission not only to perform to people who know these pieces inside out, but also to grow audiences."
